Star Festival - Tanabata

Begin your semester by wishing upon a star

Banish the winter darkness by helping to fill the Winter Garden with your hopes and dreams. Join a Japanese calligraphy workshop, write a poem, make some paper decorations, and join in the star festival celebrations.

七夕Qīxī・칠석 Chilseok・七夕 Tanabata

Known as Chinese Valentine’s Day, Double Seven Festival, and the Star Festival, this festival is observed across China and Korea, but it is in Japan where it became a major annual festival, heralding the start of the summer.

A time for wishes, poetry, love, and renewal, the Star Festival heroes two of the Languages taught at the University.

The bright paper streamers and decorations will serve to brighten the dark days of a Tasmanian winter. 

July 6-10 Paper crafting and poem writing tables will be set up in the Winter Garden for students to contribute to bamboo* ‘wishing trees.’

Tuesday July 7 Workshop with master calligrapher, Maiko Howell. Participants will write on fans and practice writing poems on tanzaku paper strips.

Wednesday July 8, 12.00 pm onwards Poetry reading and celebration with academics from Humanities and Social Sciences. Students and staff are encouraged to join in and read their own work.
